Board Game Designer Seeking Artist
200+ Artists and Graphic Designers Whose Work I Love
14 February 2019 | 65 Comments
I love beautiful products. In the world of board games, a huge part what draws me into a game and continues to immerse me is the game's art.
It's for that reason that a huge part of the budget for every Stonemaier game is for the art, graphic design, and (if applicable), 3D sculpting/modeling. It's also for that reason that we put the artist's name right on the front of the box, along with the designers:
Over the last 7 years, I've compiled a list of over 200 artists and graphic designers whose work intrigues me. Some of these people have worked on board games; others haven't, but I bet they'd do a great job for that medium.
Today I'd like to share that list with you. It includes my brief notes about the artist's style, whether they're a graphic designer, and if they do 3D sculpting/modeling. I've tried to include their website (if available) and games they've worked on, but there are gaps of information here. If someone wants to volunteer to fill them in, let me know; in the meantime, I have a publishing company to run. :)
While this is a curated list, this is truly not meant as a commentary on the quality of artists who aren't on the list.I haven't gone through every Artstation page and BoardGameGeek listing; really, this is just a list to which I've added whenever it's occurred to me to do so. I don't want to see a bunch of comments from people saying, "I can't believe you didn't include _______!"
Instead, just say, "One of my favorite artists, known for ____________, is _________. I like them because __________." Cool? Cool. Oh, and definitely don't trash anyone on this list unless they've done something terrible on a human level (and in that case, let me know about it privately so I can remove them).
Also, if you're an artist, graphic designer, and/or 3D modeler who is not on this list and would like people to check out your work, please share your portfolio link in the comments.
Thanks to Brian Henk of Overworld Games for his contributions to this list a few years ago, and thanks to Eliot Miller, who posted about this topic on Facebook a few days ago. Eliot shared with me a great talk about working with artists.
What are some of the ways you've discovered your favorite artists?
